Saltwells National Nature Reserve

Saltwells Wood, the largest woodland in the vicinity, encompasses areas that hold the distinction of being designated as Ancient Woodland, signifying their existence since at least 1600. Presently, this woodland serves as a habitat for numerous wildlife species, showcases captivating sculptures, and boasts stunning carpets of bluebells.

Doulton's Clay Pit, characterized by its impressive cliffs, offers a unique glimpse into the rock formations of the Middle and Lower Coal Measures. Although it was abandoned in the 1940s, nature has reclaimed the clay pit, resulting in a captivating transformation. Today, the site is adorned with uncommon plant species, including an abundance of common spotted and southern marsh orchids, creating a vibrant and picturesque natural environment.

To the north of Saltwells Wood lies Netherton Hill, characterized by its grassland and scrub vegetation. This area was once the site of opencast coal mining activities until the 1960s. However, it has since transformed into a habitat for various bird species, including Linnets and Reed Buntings.

Continuing further north, we come across Cinder Bank, another region that underwent restoration after coal mining operations. Within Cinder Bank, there is a significant feature called Daphne Pool, which serves as a habitat for an impressive sixteen species of dragonfly. This abundance of dragonflies makes Daphne Pool one of the prime locations for observing these captivating insects in the West Midlands region.

If we trace the path of the Black Brook to the south of Saltwells Wood, we encounter a scenic area characterized by a combination of woodland and grassland. This area encompasses the charming hamlet of Mushroom Green, known for its chain-making history. As we follow the brook, we come across wetlands that serve as a secure sanctuary for various water bird species. These wetlands offer a vital habitat and a place of refuge for water birds, contributing to the richness of the local ecosystem.

As we venture further south from the Black Brook's confluence with the Mousesweet Brook, the nature reserve continues its journey. The Mousesweet Brook, historically significant, was dammed during the 17th century, resulting in the creation of Cradley New Pool. This reservoir served as a reliable water source, powering Cradley Forge, located nearby on the opposite side of the road where the brook meets the Stour River.

Cradley Forge holds great historical importance as it was constructed in the 1600s by Dud Dudley. It is believed that Dud Dudley conducted his initial experiments on iron smelting using coal at this forge. These experiments were instrumental in the development of the iron industry and played a significant role in paving the way for the Industrial Revolution, a transformative era in history.

Mushroom Green Chain Shop is opened by Industrial Heritage Stronghold on the second Sunday of the month from April to October 2:30 – 5pm. Admission is free.
